Packing and Nimrods

A week from today, at this very time, I will be on board Alaska Airlines Fight #189 for the last leg of my trip, preparing for take-off from Anchorage to Fairbanks!!!  YAY!!!!  This is the very 1st time, out of all the times I have flown up there, that I will be arriving in the afternoon!

I get in at 4:18.  Unheard of!  Of course, in order to do that, my flight leaves here at 6:00 AM.  It was originally 7 AM, but they changed it.  That means I need to be there at 5 AM and we live 45 minutes from the airport, so we need to leave the house at 4 AM, which means I need to get up.....O.M.G.......2:30 or 2:45ish.  UGGG!  I can't even begin to function without at least 2 cups of coffee, and don't rush me with that!  Then there will be the last minute items to go in the suitcase, but I think I can avoid any of that.  That way Mr. Hustle-Bustle won't have to be chomping at the bit to load my suitcases.

Some members of our amazing Derby Family have arranged for a little get together, upon my arrival :-).  It's going to be at River City Cafe, where my dearest Riley works!  Next to the fare at my daughter's home, this is the best food in the Fairbanks North Star Borough!! I already know what I'm going to have.  I'll start with an X-Large Cinnamon Latte with extra cinnamon (to help keep me alert) and then I will have a Roast Beef Croissant sandwich, with cheddar, sprouts, avocado, tomato and horseradish.  Oh, Lordy!  I can just taste it now.  To go along with that will be a fresh Raspberry Lemonade.  Yummm!  I sure hope Riley doesn't have to work so she can meet me at the airport with her Mama and the rest of my sweeties!  Gads!!  I just can't wait to get HOME!!

And have I been packing!  Well, gathering, actually.  1 huge suitcase on the bed, 1 huge suitcase beside the bed, and the bed is piled with stuff and clothes and stuff....I need lots of clothes for this time of year up there.  There will be chilly days, then very warm days during which I will sweat like a pig 'neath that big Alaskan sun!  That will turn into just chilly mornings & evenings and very warm afternoons.  Shorts, sweaters, sneakers, sandals....they are all required.  And God forbid I don't take all my favorite clothes!  What would happen if I went to get dressed and there was nothing there that I felt like wearing?!?  That's pretty bad, but I've always been that way.  I wish I could just love all of my clothes unconditionally and be able to wear any of them any time......but I don't.

Well, the Nimrod did the front door thing again last night, and I was having one of those days where I could barely put any weight on my left leg without it feeling like I was going to self-destruct.  It was about 5:30.  Chuck wasn't home yet.  I was in the kitchen working on supper and I saw him pull in behind the barn, then turn around and leave.  Next thing I knew....bang, bang, bang on the freaking front door.  I went, opened the door and he said "So, Pops isn't home yet?"  F*** me!!  No, Nimrod!! If his van isn't behind the barn, there's no place else for him to hide it!  ARGGG.  Really, all I said was "no" and he turned and bounded down the steps and left.  I slammed the door so hard the windows rattled all over the house.  About 5 minutes later, Chuck came in the back door and Nimrod was right behind him.  I waited a few minutes and then I asked him if he could do me a big favor, and explained the whole thing to him.  Nicely.  Calmly.  Diplomatically. He said, sure.  No problem.  Chuck piped up and said to him, what the hell do you do that for?? He said,  "hell, I didn't want to walk to the house from there!"  Chuck said, "well you better!  Don't be expecting her to have to run around letting your lazy ass in!"  Hee hee.  I loved it!  But we'll see how long it lasts.  Ya know, he could have just called me.  Didn't even have to come to the door to verify the obvious.

I ordered my Nextbook on Sunday and chose free shipping to save a few bucks.  That usually takes awhile and they did give me a delivery date of April 5th.  I knew it would show up before then, but didn't expect it as soon as yesterday!  Needless to say, I stashed the box until Chuck went to bed and then spent 3 hours trying to make sense of it and downloading Apps.  The 1st App???  Why, Angry Birds, of course! I can see several things:
  • Gonna take awhile to get used to it
  • I haven't fallen totally in love with it yet (this isn't a good thing. meh)
  • I need a screen protector
  • I really need a case, but can only find black for this new model and I really want red! Or green, like my Nook
  • Not sure about the Android OS, although it shouldn't matter
  • I'm bummed that although I could install Firefox as my browser, I can't use my Yahoo  toolbar. which has all my bookmarks and I've used it for EONS.  I'm sure I can move them.
I'm not convinced that it's a keeper.  Maybe I jumped into it too soon without checking more models,  but it was hard to resist it when the Sug retail was $475 and HSN had it for $199.00.  I found it on eBay for both prices and everything in between, so I'm comfortable with the price.  I just need Poolie, or a handful of my grands to show me the wonders of it all.  If I didn't already have my beloved Nook, I would be much more enamored of it.  Geez......I sound like an old Geezer trying to make sense of modern technology!!  AGHHHH!!!  Just shoot me now!

Speaking of old geezers, this afternoon I get to go for a vascular screening of my feet.  How funny is that?  Because of my "toe issue" (which I'm not sure I ever blogged about, but wrote about on FB) the foot Dr wants to make sure that the circulation in my legs, feet and toes is okay before she confirms my problem to be from many years of frozen Alaska toes.  I sure hope that's all it is, but it could be directly related to all the damn cigarettes that I have, will and do smoke.  F*&%ing cigarettes, anyway!

I have to say that while I was in San Diego and my smoking was extremely limited, I felt a whole lot better.  But I'm not smart enough to cut back when I don't have to.  If I could just make myself go outside to smoke and not sit here at my computer puffing away, it would be such a big help.  And every night when I go to bed I say to myself, "Margaret!  Tomorrow is the day!  You will NOT smoke in the house anymore!!"  But that stupid Margaret won't listen.  I told my friend, D, the other day that I'll quit after my surgery and I get all healed up.  Then I won't have all the extra frustrations (the pain and limitations, blah blah, yada yada) to deal with.  Should be easier, right?  Yeah....right.  I doesn't matter what the circumstances are.  Smoking doesn't make it better at all, but it sure is comforting to reach for that pack of cigarettes and light one up.  Oh, well.  It won't be today cuz I just bought a carton yesterday.  Can't waste $48 now can I?????  Doh!

I must take my camera with me today and try to get some good shots of Spring Things in BFA.  There are pretty things blooming everywhere, and I need to take some pictures before it gets too damn hot for me to give a crap.

My beautiful girls are losing their winter hair and will soon be gorgeous and shiny equine beauties!  I wish I could be out there brushing them each day, but I can't.  Chuck does a little each night when he gets home, but I miss being able to do it.  Next year!  I'll be back at it next year! And the grass is growing nicely in their pasture, so that Susie is munching happily while Dixie looks longingly over the fence, watching her Mama eat fresh green yummies.  Dixie is on a diet again.  Poor horse is forever on a diet.  They need extra food in the winter to help keep up their body heat and Susie never gains, but Dixie blows up like a balloon.  She's on her annual spring time diet of hay and water....no grass, no grain, no treats......other than her morning carrots.

There is a baby update, of sorts. Jin's contractions are too sporadic to amount to anything other than being annoying, so her Dr told her she could work if she wanted to.  That was her plan for today.  We'll see how long she lasts.  I'm making pretty good progress on the blanket.  I'm using a different pattern than I was originally and I like working on it much better.  That will make a difference!  Why?  Cuz that's how I roll!  LOL

For now, I feel a wee cleaning spree coming on and shall knit a bit each time I need to sit down for a few.  Catch ya later!

Plays, Knitting & Babies.....Oh My!

One of the major highlights of the San Diego trip was the opportunity to see the videos of 2 plays that Poolie wrote and directed.  They were amazing fun!

One of them was The Wizard of Ahhhhs
This one was SO funny and had some amazing characters with exceptional people playing the parts!

The other one was Peter Pan

Another excellent production and had many of the same cast members.  I loved that I could finally see these plays.  The results of something that my dear friend is so passionate about and that clearly shows how very talented she is at creating and pulling together such a magnificent project, just warmed my heart.  I am so proud of her and wish she could pursue this passion of hers more fully.

As for me, my current form  of production is knitting.  My most recent project is a baby blanket for Jin (the gal that works for Chuck).  The baby's due date is April 25th and for what reason I am not sure, the doctor was going to induce her.  Since I leave for Alaska on April 20th, she asked the Dr to induce her on the 18th so that she would have the baby before I leave.  Well........ Murphy decided to 'work' on the baby blanket whilst I was in San Diego.  I had it in a project tote and I really thought it was 'kitty proof', but I was wrong.  She managed to get my 32" circular needles pulled out of this blanket (that was 3/4 finished, btw); she chewed the cable, extensively, ruining a $25 set of needles, AND she chewed on the yarn!  Both on a ball of yarn and also on the edges of the blanket itself.  So on Saturday, I ripped it all out and started over. Of course I was thinking that I had almost a month and that if I worked really hard and put a lot of time in it, I could finish it before little Lilly is born!  Well, yesterday Jin was spotting and having a lot of mucus discharge, along with much pressure.  She saw the Dr and he said she was still well "intact" and to take it easy yesterday and it was okay to return to work today.  Apparently Lilly has other ideas.  Jin called Chuck this AM and told us that she is having contractions, which as we all know, may or may not amount to anything.  Regardless.....I have a feeling that Lilly will be here before her blanket is ready!  I also have a feeling that I need a lock box for my knitting!

Anyone want a crazy cat???  Free shipping!!!

Wanna Give Someone the Finger!

The first thing I want to talk about today is my ring finger on my right hand.  Or, should I say, my 'Former' ring finger....since I can no longer wear any of my dozens of rings on it!  The knuckle on this finger has taken on a life of it's own, and I really, REALLY don't like it!  Today it hurts.  A lot! So I'm gonna share.  About a year ago I noticed that my knuckle was swelling and it was becoming hard to get my rings on and off.  I figured, okay.  I've got arthritis in various parts of my body, including both thumbs, so it stands to reason that my fingers will eventually be affected. Problem is, it just kept getting bigger and was hurting quite a bit.  I mean, I already take meds for my arthritis (which doesn't take care of all of the associated pain and/or discomfort, but helps a great deal) so why was it hurting so much?  I went to see my Doc so he could determine if mayhaps it was a cyst or a chipped bone or something, and he deemed it good old arthritis. Crap.  So, deal with it.  It was about that time that I took the 1st picture here, back in September.

It quit bothering me and didn't seem to be metamorphosing, so I decided to have some of my favorite rings resized.  At the going price of gold and silver, it is a little pricey these days to go up 2 full ring sizes, but Chuck agreed that it was fine so I did about 8 or 9 rings.  Now, my ring finger WAS a size 9, but this knuckle now required a size 11 for clearance. My middle finger is size 11, so I figured that if my ring finger decided to have another growth spurt, I could always wear these rings on my middle finger.

This second picture was taken this AM, and you can see that it has, in fact, started metamorphosing again. This AM the whole thing is just throbbing and hurts the entire length of it, not just the knuckle. Guess that's what prompted me to finally write about it.That had been my intention when I took the 1st picture, but I never got around to it.  That's just a really big change in 5 months time. I think maybe I'll let Dr. H take another look and see if I can inspire him to snap a little x-ray of it....just for peace of mind....or something.

The sad thing is, that I have a massive jewelry collection.  Well over 100 rings.  Seriously.  All gold and silver and gemstone.  A lot of them can't be resized 2 sizes, because of their settings.  And the only finger they will fit on is my left ring finger, which houses my wedding ring.  Lots of $$ tied up and just sitting there, but worst of all is the fact  that I dearly love most of those abandoned rings and it gives me a huge sad to not be able to wear them.  Ah, hell...enough sniveling.

Yesterday I went for my 'annual' eye exam.  It's been 2 years :-).  When we 1st moved here I went to Fayetteville Mall, to Sears Optical cuz they had a great sale on glasses happening.  What I found was an awesome eye Doctor!  She's amazing and SO thorough and just plain adorable.  So I continue to go there.  Yesterday, glasses were 50% off and because I am a repeat customer, I got an extra 10%.....sooooo.....when I was having trouble deciding between the purple or the cranberry, I decided to get both :).  I'm really sick of my current glasses (except when I want to read something) so it'll be fun to have 2 new and cool ones to wear.  (life's simple pleasures).

But, I do have to snivel a wee bit more.  The trek from the parking lot, through half of Sears, to get to the Optical shop, just about did me in.  And the trek BACK to the parking lot DID do me in.  Holy Crap!  I sat in the truck thinking, what the hell do I think I'm doing???  Going to San Diego in 3 weeks.  Going to Alaska in 7 1/2 weeks.  I should be doing these things after my surgery!  Well.....I WILL be doing them then, too. But still.....I need to see my friends.  I can't wait to be together with Poolie and Terri T again!  And God knows, I desperately NEED to see Terri and Riley and Maggie and Emily and Timmy and Xander and....yes, even my SIL, Michael :-).  I just SO hate to be an inconvenience or imposition because of my freaking limitations.  I feel like such a wuss.  But the reality is, not one of them will make me feel that way.  In fact, ALL of them will make me feel like I'm the same old Yankee Chick and the same old Mom and the same old Grammy and it'll all be good!  Damn good!! So what the hell am I whining about?!?!?  It's just been over 3 years of this shit and I'm so sick of it!!!

It's been exactly 3 years this month since I last rode my Susie, so I guess that makes it 3 1/2 years.  I first went to see the Doc about my severe hip pain whilst riding  back in September of '08. (but I wasn't giving up on riding yet!)  Holy cow!  Holy Moly!  Holy Crap!!!

Now I want to write about Susie and I want to write about my antique booth, but this is long enough!  Hopefully I will get my butt back here and write about that stuff tomorrow!  In case anyone decides to come and read. :-)

Bless Me Blog-Father...

for I have sinned.  It has been 2 months and one week since my last confession blog entry.  I haven't even been reading any!  Just an occasional peek at a few.  Blogging just doesn't hold my interest like it once did.  I try really, REALLY hard and I do think about it a great deal, but never quite make it here.  So many of my old blog buddies don't write any more and some of them are on FaceBook, so we keep in touch there.  That's not the same.  FB is a whole different ball of wax and shouldn't replace blogging, by any means.

So, I'm here today but might not be here again for quite awhile.  Who knows. My life is so helter skelter.  I have no real (or reasonable) routine and it's hard for me to function and accomplish much of anything this way.  But I can't seem to find my groove.  And every time I try to establish some sort of routine to my days, if it gets interrupted, I get all flustered or even resentful of the intrusion.  Like....what the hell does it matter?!?  I'm hopeless. LOL

I do have some amazingly good news to share! Which is one reason I have been drawn to my blog. I am getting together with  2 of my bestest buddies in the whole wide world in March!!  My Senior Moments, Terri T and I will be flying to San Diego to spend a week with Poolie!  We met in the World of Blog and have had several get-togethers.  Always an adventure and always great fun.  I can't wait to spend time with them and I can't wait to just get away from it all for a few days!

I will also be heading to Alaska for a month at the end of April or first part of May.  Haven't got that pin pointed yet, as it is pending pinning down the dates of a trip Chuck will be taking in the spring.  He'll be going to Wyoming with Dixie.  A guy he knows has a cattle ranch there and he wants to be in on Spring Round-up and Branding.  If he had a bucket list, I guess doing something like this would be right at the top, so good for him :).  I'm just enjoying a peaceful easy feeling of knowing that he doesn't mind my month long trip to Alaska again.  Last year was so awesome and this year will be even better!

I think for now, I need to get off of here and go to some X-Mas decorating and stuff.  Chuck has been busy all week getting ready to have Dixie and her buggy in a local Christmas parade and so he only got all my decorations out today.  Puts me a bit behind schedule for trying to get my X-Mas spirit mustered up, but better late than never!  TTFN, if anyone is out there!  LOL

Holy Cow!

Another week, another post.  Can't keep up the daily thing, although I regret it because I like having a reference to things and after so many days have passed, I forget most of what I wanted to write.  I even made some notes......they're around here somewhere....... LOL

My last post was  in regard to trying to de-clutter and reorganize "My Room".  Well, some of it is done and some is not.  No big deal.  It will happen.  Actually the knitting bug that bit me back in May has been taking over and I've been a knitting fool, with some occasional reading tossed in the mix.  Why I've even been in the kitchen more and much to Chuck's delight he has recently consumed 2 batches of cookies and a cake! He's been like a kid, so excited that I have felt like baking again.  LOL

During that time frame my PC was in the hospital.  A bad storm and power outage zapped my network adapter and the  apparently my battery back up was dead and I didn't know it and the abrupt shut down corrupted my OS and blah, blah, yada, yada.  The poor battery backup is about 12 years old and was located in an out of the way place so that I never noticed that the lights were off and that it was simply functioning as a $150 power strip!  Got a shiny new one, and it's placed right where I can see it!  I found a great local repair shop and at first I was not pleased with them because they 'missed something' but they went above and beyond to make it up to me, so all is well.  I had my laptop, but am rather limited with what I can do on it (with my photos, bookwork, etc.) thus I had more knitting time.

I have several knitting projects I want to complete before December and a sewing project or 2 as well, but I am just not as enchanted with sewing as I once was.  Once I get a table cleared off and my Embroidery Machine stuff put away, I can get working on a couple quilts as well.  Chuck keeps reminding me to not be so hard on myself for the things that I can't do around the house and do just relax and let myself DO and ENJOY the things I want to do, because for all intents and purposes I am 'retired'.  I think it's beginning to sink in.  I have spent far too much time simply lost in thought trying to come to terms with all the changes in my life and wasting too much energy on the negative.  I think I'm on the way back up the hill out of my black hole.

*************************
Well, heck!  I started this like, Wednesday I think, and never finished or posted it.  Duh.  I was just about to start a new post, but will toss this out there and write one later.  I'm off to get ready to go shopping with Victoria!  My 1st outing of it's kind.  Let's hope I hold up.  My Vicodin is going into my purse as soon as I hit the Publish button :)

Shopping Online

I was supposed to have a rare shopping opportunity with my BFF yesterday and it didn't work out.  While posting my complaint about it on FaceBook, my buddy Terri @ myseniormoments suggested that since I always get the short end of the stick when we have vehicle problems, I should just shop online.  Well, I'm here to tell you......I do plenty of that!  Here are some of my recent acquisitions

This first picture is a Photo/Panting done by the Photographer that took Riley's senior portraits.  She is quite the artist and has many talents.  When I saw some of her Photo/Paintings, I just knew that we had to have one of the horses!  I found some pictures of The Girls and sent them to her and we finally decided on this one.  The overall size is 30 x 30 and it is stunning!!

What happens is this.  I had a 20x30 photo printed of this picture and had it shipped to her.  She actually tears the edges (in this case to make it about 19x19) then she affixes it to a canvas.  In this instance, she did an abstract border in colors to complement the picture. The wonderful thing IS, we didn't actually discuss colors and it just so happens this will look perfect on our green living room wall!!Another awesome aspect of this painting is that the sides of the canvas, where it wraps around the frame, are painted as well.  That gives it a wonderful unique finish and I don't have to frame it :).
If you'd like to see some of her other work, go here Christina-M-Ehlinger~Artist for starters.

I had planned to give it to Chuck for X-Mas, but she got it done so quickly and I received it last week.....and our anniversary is this coming Friday (the 12th)....soooooo.....I'm giving it to him for our anniversary!  I can't wait!!  We don't always exchange gifts and usually just treat ourselves to an "All we can eat Lobster or King Crab fest" at home.  He'll be so surprised and I know he's gonna absolutely flip over it!  I can't wait to get it on the wall, as we have a perfect empty spot behind the love seat that has just been waiting to be filled for about 6 years now!  Next weekend I'll get to post photos of it on the wall!! I can't wait!  Squeal!!!!!!!!!

The next picture of online acquisitions is just one box of many that I have been buying since I went to Alaska in May and acquired serious knitting fever.
Not only did my lovely daughter, Terri, get me to finally take the 'knitting plunge', she also gave me the bug for only the finest yarns!  When I did alot of crocheting, I always preferred some of the better brands (such as Lion and Bernat over Red Heart), but oh, she had to get me into using wool and wool blends and alpaca and all sorts of beautiful colorways in scrumptiously delightful spun yarn!

And I have found a couple of WONderful websites that often have WONderful sales on this sort of delightful yarn!  I will give you an example of what my new passion is doing to my checking account.  I found a sweater pattern, using Noro yarn, similar to that in the above picture.  The color  I selected is darker hues, but still multi-colored.  Anyway, the pattern calls for 11 hanks (sort of a skein)so I ordered 12 to be safe and I found it for a terrific sale price! Normally $20 a hank for $14.00!  Weeeeeeeee.........Adds up tho', as do the many other great finds I have found......but they were all on sale!!  So that makes it okay, right???  Right???

See what happens.  Make me get a new bionic hip and keep me house bound for 6 weeks with a desk top, a laptop and an iPhone.  I can search, find and order from any room in the house!  When I have to explain the piles of yarn and my lack of $$......I'll blame the Percocet.  Buwahahahaha

Where Do Your Loyalties Lie?

Friendship and loyalties......how deep should they run?  I've always had a problem with this regarding both friends and family members.  So quick to go to bat for someone dear to me.  Always too quick to stop and think first.  I just jump right in, defending, supporting, protecting.  I figure if I care about someone, then I should put my 'outspoken' self to good use when I think they are being abused or attacked or otherwise mis-used by someone.  A person should really think it over before getting out their "Poison Pen" {or, these days, their "Poison Keyboard"  LOL}  Because, when the dust settles, just who do you think it is that ends up getting screwed without a kiss, and left wondering........

The first time that I got out my Poison Pen was at least 35 years ago.  My Mom and my Great-Aunt Ethel got into it over something.  God only knows what, because I can't remember to save my life!  But Aunt Ethel was really, really good at stirring things up.  The more hurtful and hateful, the better.  I just remember that she had my Mom SOOOOO upset, that my Dad was about to step in and give Aunt Ethel a piece of his mind (which was totally not my Dad's typical scenario).  So.....I decided to take Poison Pen in hand and I wrote her a letter that would have scorched the Devil himself.  When I got done verbally butchering her for the issue at hand, I tossed in few more of her devilish antics for good measure.  End result?  She and Mom made amends, actually because of some of the things I pointed out in my letter. But Aunt Ethel would have nothing to do with ME til the day she died, several years later.

I really think that was the only family member involved but it has happened numerous times thru the years and my loyalties usually leave me with being the bad guy.  Odd man out.  Go figure.

One of the worst cases was actually a little different scenario.  In an attempt to aid an 'acquaintance' and offset a potentially dangerous situation, myself and a dear friend jumped in right up to our ears.  Round and round it went.  Tons of people involved, twisting and turning and dredging until the original 'cause' was lost in the shuffle and in the very end, friend and I were hung out to dry.  Eventually and ultimately by the 'acquaintance'!  WTF to the max!  Epic Fail..........

Another time, I apparently looked at a long time buddy (with whom I had much in common) cross-eyed one day and she literally tore me a new a$$-hole on the world wide web!  I have never been so humiliated, had such vile, hateful things said about me in my life! And such lies.  That was the worst part.  I'm so not perfect.  In fact, much less so than most people, but really........Okay, so I look back on that and, obviously, realize that this person was never a friend and a thing like that can make you start to look around you.  If you were me, would you feel 'set adrift' if close friends commiserated with you, but went on to continue their relationship with this 'buddy'.  Would you feel hurt to see them together?  Would you think that maybe they believed all the BS and doubted you? How would you feel?  If the shoe was on the other foot, I am the sort of friend that would tend to back away from the buddy for having been so cruel and unjust to my friend.  Probably gotten out my "Poison Keyboard" and made it worse.  But that's just me.  How deeply should the loyalties of friendship go?

I am quick to anger and quicker to hurt, which is a very bad combination, indeed.  I am also quick to trust, but I'm learning.  I need people in my life that I can feel good about and trust with anything and that I know I can count on.....always.  And I have that in my wonderful little family.  I am ever so blessed to have Terri & Mike and all of my wonderful grand-babies!  Without them, life is bursting with insecurities and uncertainty.  I DO have a lot of amazing friends out there, but I am learning that it is a rare, rare friendship that will ever be unblemished.  I am learning never to expect that of others.  It's just not the fair or right thing to do.  But my family????  They better toe the line!!  LMAO

Life is Too Short

A dear friend lost his brother in a tragic accident last Thursday.  He was cutting trees at their parents house, when one bounced back and pinned him under it.  Their 86 year old father stood helplessly by and watched his youngest son slowly die before the EMTs could get there.  Big brother arrived at the same time as the EMTs; they were all too late to help him.  He was non-responsive at that point and pronounced dead at the hospital.

He was only 52 years old.  Actually, he would have been 52 yesterday.  His family couldn't have his funeral on his birthday, so it is today.  After a couple of failed marriages, he finally met his perfect match about 6 years ago and they have been married about 5 years. Thankfully, his last few years were happy ones and spent with someone that he could enjoy a rich full life with.

My heart aches for my friend, to have lost his only sibling. Sadly, I have 1st hand experience. They were very close and involved in so many things together.  But even more, my heart aches for their parents.  To lose a child is the greatest pain and loss a person can experience.  To witness it and be helpless to do anything? Even worse.

It's a grave reminder that life is too short, and can be even shorter when least expected.

And all I can do is pray for all of them.  How I wish I could do so much more...........

Kitty Visitation and Casinos

Well, this morning I get to go to Fayetteville and meet "Rosey", my potential new kitty!  If she and I hit it off, and if the foster mom approves of me, I may have a fun new friend this weekend!  WooHoo!!  I'm not sure exactly how this adoption thing works.  I'm meeting them at Petsmart and really don't know if I will be bringing her home with me or what.  I'll find out in a couple of hours!

My friend, Deb, conned me into going to a Casino in Oklahoma last night to play.........are you ready for this????  Bingo.  yep.  Bingo.  I haven't played Bingo since I was 8 years old and used to go with my Great-Grandmother at the fire station on Friday nights.  Wow!!  Has the world of Bingo changed big time over the years!! I muddled through, with much help from Deb.  She LOVES to play, LOVES the slots and is usually very lucky at it.  She did win $200 at Bingo last night.  I did not win anything :(.  I did get a Player Club card from the Casino and since it was my 1st time there, it had $10 loaded on it.  I used that and got up to $18 on the slot machines, but then went thru that pretty quickly.  So I put in one dollar of my own money and won $29.  Played $2 of that and quit and cashed it in.  The Bingo pack was $27.50, so I broke even.  Not very exciting, let me tell ya.  Deb was disappointed because I didn't have a very good time {as in, win anything}, but it was cool.  She loves to go and used to go once a week, back when times were a bit better for them.  It's been a very long time since she has felt she could splurge and she wanted me to go so badly, that I couldn't refuse!

Truthfully, I would have rather stayed home and watched Big Bang Theory, but don't tell her that!  LMAO

Cleaning Up My Act

So did I tell you that my good friend {and neighbor}, Deb, came and helped me clean my house?  A couple of weeks ago, this amazing lady came by every afternoon at 4:00 after working all day, and worked for about 3 hours a night for 3 nights.  My house looks amazing.  She has been offering to help me since before my surgery and I always declined.  Chuck offered to hire her to do some of the heavy and difficult stuff for me and I told him that, no way was I gonna have my friend clean my house. {As a side note, she works for Chuck cleaning houses that he remodels and repairs for a local bank after they have to repo them}

Anyway, since we have all tile and hardwood floors thru the whole house, it requires sweeping and mopping.  Vacuuming would be easier for me.  Sweeping is difficult because of the twisting motion of my body as I do it.  But between Chuck, Gus and daily visits from Deb's grandsons, there is much dirt, hay, leaves, etc, etc tracked in and so I do sweep fairly often.  It's a daunting task, but I suck it up.  But Deb comes in one night after work, sat down and said I'm gonna smoke a cigarette with you and then I'm gonna mop your floor and I won't take no for an answer.  And she did!  She moved the table and chairs and stools and everything else and "mopped" the floor on her hands and knees!  I busied myself putting all the odd things away that end up out of place and just sitting around.  When she was done with that, she scrubbed all of my kitchen cabinets and oiled them.  And that was just the 1st night!  She was an inspiration, for sure.  The next night, she did the laundry room and downstairs bathroom, while I oiled the coffee table and end tables.  During the day, I managed to get all of my curtains down and washed and got the windows washed, as well as washing up all of my 'treasures' that have been sitting collecting dust on my shelves in my sewing/computer room.
My house looks wonderful, and it's surprising how easy it is to keep it that way now.

Chuck unearthed my Dirt Devil that I totally forgot I had, and I've been using that instead of sweeping {easier on my back doing the forward motion thing} and using my wet Swiffer mop afterward. It was just too easy to let some things go undone, because I knew I would be hurting before I was finished.  But....I'm afraid that it's time to admit that I might not get much further than I already am and I just need to suck it up and do it!  It'll be a hell of a lot easier now.

Chuck was so insistent about paying her, that they got into a big old fight and she wouldn't speak to him for 3 days! God knows, they could use the money, but she wouldn't take it! It was pretty comical, actually.  But she wanted to do it for ME.  She knew how badly I wanted the house to look nice for Terri and RH's visit and had been watching me struggle trying to get things accomplished and she had just had enough of me refusing her help!  She is an awesome friend, indeed.

Now if I could just get Gus to quit leaving his toys all over the house! LOL

I'm still trying to get used to wearing one contact lens.  It's been a week and a half and it's not happening yet.  I know some people that got used to it that quickly, but it can take several weeks for others.  I'm not sure I'll have that much patience!  But I will give it a bit longer.  It sure is nice under many circumstances, but not for everything.

Visitors and Birthdays

Friday was a big day! In fact my whole week, plus, has been a world wind of activity and although I intended to blog as I went, as usual I neglected writing and reading.

The first big news is that my teeny beautiful first grandbaby, Riley, turned 18 on Friday!

Such a beautiful teeny baby has grown into a gorgeous, wonderful young woman!  And absolutely NO ONE could be more proud of or full of love for their grandchild!

The other BIG news is that I had company!!  One of my very dearest friends, Terri T {aka MySeniorMoments, aka My5Cents} and her hubby, RH, came to visit!!  They were only here for the day, as they were on their way to visit a couple of Terri's sisters, but we had a terrific afternoon and evening together.  The day went by so incredibly fast, though.  Why does that always have to happen??  It was their first time to visit my home and to meet Chuck and Gus and The Girls.  RH loves horses and he really enjoyed getting a little one on one time with them.  Hopefully next visit, Dixie will be fully recovered and the boys can go riding, and Terri and I can do some Girl Stuff :).

One of the other 'adventurous' happenings of the week was my visit to the Eye Doctor.  It has only been 9 months, but for some reason my prescription had changed quite a bit.  I could tell it had and I also was interested in finally pursuing the use of  Mono-Vision contact lenses.  I should say 'lens', as I am only wearing one, in my right eye, for reading.  My distance vision is fine....at least it has been for the past few years.  Oddly enough, I used to have to wear glasses to drive, but could read just fine.  Ahhh....the changes that come with age.  Anyway, when I was at my last appt with her, the Doc has suggested that I was a perfect candidate for this Mono-Vision contact lens thing, but I really had to think about it.  I never thought I would be able to insert and remove something onto my eyeball!  LOL  But it really is a piece o' cake :).  It can take a week or two for your eyes to adjust and I'm still at the 'blurry stage', but only for distance.  For reading, it is amazing!!  And so far, it really sucks for the computer, but time will tell.  I also got an awesome new pair of glasses that I LOVE, so mayhaps I will just have to resort to early mornings and late evenings for doing most of my computer stuff.  Time will tell.

My other big thing this week is that I am really REALLY wanting a cat.  I miss my Princess terribly and there is no replacing her, that's for sure.  But I have been wanting another cat for ages anyway and especially now.  Kittens are cute, that's for sure, but I really want to 'rescue' an adult cat.  But it has to be just the right cat, know what I mean??  I had a wonderful Maine Coon cat years ago and would dearly love to have another.  Hopefully there is one out there just 'waiting' for me :)

Doctors, Roses and Tahoes

Most things were going halfway decent this week.  Got home from an interesting weekend of camping to become besieged with outrageous allergies, mostly due to the entire countryside being covered with a plethora of yellow 'flowers', AKA, Ragweed.  The Ragweed and grass pollen counts are off the  charts here and I've got it bad.  Head and chest congestion, coughing up "pollen balls" (sounds better than phlegm) and much blowing.  Yuck.  It is very {unusually} dry and the lack of humidity and low dewpoint makes it worse.  I pray for a break in the weather SOON!

While we were camping, we had a call that our friends son was in a motor cycle accident so they hopped in their truck and headed for the hospital, but did come back later, as he was 'fine'.  Totaled the bike, but he escaped with only a broken collarbone and 3 staples in his head along with an abundance of 'road rash'.  They guy that got hurt was Roy, that used to work for Chuck.  He was riding the "Crotch Rocket" that belongs to the guy that currently works for Chuck.  No insurance on the bike.  Crazy people.

I had an appointment scheduled for my X-rays and visit with the Neurosurgeon on Wednesday.  It was to be my long awaited and anxiously anticipated 6 month check up.  The hospital lost my order for the X-Rays, causing a long enough of a delay that I couldn't see the surgeon afterward.  That got rescheduled for today.  MY surgeon was out of town, so I had to see another one.  I was NOT happy about that, especially since I couldn't get any straight answers or information out of him.  I did at least find out that my X-rays showed that all of my hardware is still in place and the bone grafts appear to be healing quite nicely.  That is very good news, and my main concern, but......I had many questions about a few issues I have been having and some limitations I am still experiencing.  Didn't get any satisfaction out of this guy!  In a nut shell, he told me that I should be happy that I am not in as much pain as I was prior to the surgery; that I need to remember that I am no longer 20 years old {WTF?}; that where I am at might be as good as it gets but I should continue to see improvement over the next 6 months.  Crap on a cracker.  That was so not how I wanted this appointment to turn out.

I did finally get my Tahoe back on Wednesday after being without it for almost 3 weeks while Chuck's van was awaiting the arrival of a new engine.  But then the water pump went out on the Tahoe, so I was without it for most of yesterday.  Good grief.  I think our vehicle situation should be back to 'normal' now and it sure feels good to have my 'Ho back!

The rose garden we put in last month seems to be a success!  The gal we bought the roses from had trimmed them all back...a LOT, and after the trauma of the transplant I wasn't sure they would fare well, but they all have a lot of new growth and we have had a bloom here and there, but now they are suddenly growing like crazy! Here's a shot I took of one bloom and some buds on Monday,
Rose and buds

And here they are today!
Rose and Buds

yep! These are all those little buds, all opened up and quite fragrant! The other plants are getting lots of buds, as well. Very encouraging, indeed. Now if we can just get them to survive the winter :)

Here We Go Again...........

Packing up the motorhome and headed camping with Roy, Deb and the boys.  This time, I am not wearing myself out cooking all day to prepare stuff to take.  And I am not going to carry heavy stuff out to the motorhome and make 152 trips doing it.  (Chuck already has)  And I have already packed all of my 'just in case' meds for my leg spasms and sleeping :).  It should be much more enjoyable this time. All I have to do tomorrow is make a big batch of salsa (that everyone seems to love) and take a few things from the fridge out and I'll be ready to go.

I've still been without my truck for the second week.  The new engine for Chuck's van didn't come in until today and it 'should' be ready Friday.  Hopefully I will have my wheels back on Monday.  YAY!  I am just used to being able to come and go as I please and being stranded hasn't been too painful, but it's been a bit inconvenient.  My purple hair is fading and the silver roots are WAY over-exposed.  I am desperately in need of a fresh set of nails and a pedicure. I haven't been able to go the the fitness center to do my back and leg strengthening exercises (boo hoo).  Mostly I miss my weekly lunches with Victoria.  We talk almost everyday, but we have the most fun when we get together.

Here are a couple of pictures I took the other day.  Even tho I didn't dare get close enough to miss part of the house, thereby screwing up the composition, I am still pleased that the splashing of the little Mama Bluebird shows up so well.

There!  All clean!!  So cute to watch.  I love my bird bath :)

Southern Fried Yankee

The heat wave and dry spell continue, here in Arkansas.  All sorts of records are being broken as temps stay above 100 with heat index up to 115 most days.  In fact the days have turned to weeks and we have had no rain.  Everything is dry and crunchy...especially our lawn.  I have thrown away 1/2 of my plants because even after being watered twice daily, they are still dying.  It's really sad.  And everyday I light a candle and send up a prayer of thanks to the person that invented A/C!  LOL

Yesterday was a very fun day, in spite of the heat.  My dear friend, Victoria and I went to a nearby town to check out what was reputed to be an awesome quilt and yarn shop.  We left there, not only empty handed but very disappointed, as well.  It is unheard of for me to go to a fabric store and leave empty handed, but nothing inspired me.  I was mostly focused on checking out their yarn because nice yarn shops are far and few between in these parts, but I have more yarn just in my sewing room than they had in their entire shop!

The town we went to, Siloam Springs, is right on the Oklahoma border and about a 38 mile drive from Rogers.  It has some great older homes and fun little shops, so we did drive around and check them out.  Sure wish I had taken one of my cameras, but with yarn on the brain, I wasn't thinking about taking pictures.  It was very interesting to both of us {having both been raised hard core Catholics} to see that a couple of churches were being turned into homes!  We weren't even 'allowed' to enter a non-Catholic church, so the idea of living in a church, at first, made us both gasp!  But then, of course, we laughed at our silliness.  Times have sure changed!

All of our traipsing around the various Antique shops and such, did us both in, though.  V had knee surgery a few months before I had my back surgery and it bothers her to over-do it, as well.  I fared better with my shopping trips with Riley than I did yesterday, for some reason.  It was great fun, but we were wiped out and actually cut the day a bit shorter than originally planned.  The heat didn't help any!

As for my progress, my physical therapy ended about 3 weeks ago, and I must admit that I have not been doing my exercises as diligently as I should be and I need to work on that.  It's been almost 5 months and I'm pretty discouraged about the potential 'quality of life' that I will be left with.  BUT, he said that it would take a year, so I try to be patient.  I finally have my 6 month check up scheduled, for Sept 29th and I am SO anxious to go and see if I am healing properly and how things look on the inside, as well as to get the surgeons input on my progress.  Most days I try to make myself do more than I really feel up to doing, just because I feel that I NEED to.  Sometimes it works out okay and other times I am sorry.  I'm beginning to feel that that will always be the way it is.  I sure hope not, but I really don't know.  I can safely say that I am glad I had the surgery.  In spite of the ordeal, I am much better off the way I am now, as opposed to pre-surgery.  There is no question about that!  I do know that alot of what I am experiencing now, is due to nerve damage that took place during the surgery.  Not necessarily "damage", but simply the moving and repositioning of the nerves to accommodate the changes that took place in there.  That still affects my legs a great deal.  Bah.  Enough of that.

Chuck is outside building my rose garden bed.  Time to go supervise the planting :).  Pictures tomorrow and a Dixie update.  Stay tuned!!

Remember Me???

Well, here I am, all set to post an entry (after ALLLLLLL this time) and find out that there will be changes made to the blog background that I am using. It's all easy to 'fix', I just have to be able to access the website of the blog hosting place to make the necessary changes to keep my template and it has been horrendously busy for the past 2 days! Not sure what you'll see if you do venture over here. Probably just "words on a page". Who knows!

Anyway, it will be 2 weeks tomorrow since Riley and Timmy left and I had fully expected to lapse into a coma of complete and utter grief at their departure. I just knew I was going to be lost in a sea of loneliness, surviving only on Pepsi and very large helping of self pity! Boy, was I ever wrong to think I was gonna have time to indulge myself in THAT particular party!

I don't even know where to begin to tell the tale of what happened these past 2 weeks. I guess with the fact that Chuck had to fly out to upstate New York for his Mother's funeral, just a few days after the kids left. As some of you may or may not know, he has his own construction company. Small but very busy and has 2 full time guys and a couple of part timers going most of the time. His "Main Man" has worked for him for almost 3 years. He has been like family. His FAMILY is like family! His parents live down the road from us and we have been good friends with them for quite some time. He has 2 little boys that his mother is raising because his ex-wife is a no-good druggie, apparently more interested in cooking meth than meals. Whatever. Main Man, himself, is more interested in how many girls he can lure in than he is his kids or work or anything else to do with responsibility!

We have tried and tried to help him in every way possible. By setting a good example, by giving him chance after chance when he has left Chuck in the lurch at work. Doing things with his kids. Financially bailing him out on endless occasions, and yes......that eve includes jail. Cuz he's a good ol' boy and can NOT stay out of trouble. I think Chuck saw him as a "project". Someone that had great potential and that if he could just work with him long enough, he'd make something out of him. He blew that for the last time while Chuck was in New York.

There is SOOOO much background to all of this, but I haven't the ambition to write it all and you'd get bored of reading it, I'm sure. Main Man pulled the boner of a lifetime on the day of MIL's service and the phone calls began! Long story short, Chuck fired him over the phone and here I sat to clean up the mess! Sure kept me busy for a few days!!

I had a constant stream of people at my house and calling me, either defending him or condemning him. I tried to fend them all off and tried to tell them that Chuck would deal with it all upon his return, but everyone figured I could "help" and influence Chuck. Actually, that day......my main objective was to keep his other employee working and for us to find Chuck's van, which Main Man had taken. Once we got that, there were tools missing. Most of which were pertinent to the particular job they were working on. Gads!!!! Then I was busy getting Main Man off all the accounts Chuck has around town before he charged a bunch of stuff. I was too late on a couple of them, but got most of them squared away in time.

I think that gives you the general idea of what's been going on around here and why I didn't have a chance to indulge in my pity party! When the dust settled, which it pretty much has.....it was all a good thing.

1. No pity party. That's good
2. Main Man was a lost cause anyway.
3. Chuck now has 2 full timers that will work out much better anyway.
4. So far, much less stress being taken out on me at the end of a long day of dealing with Main Man and his shit at work.

I might go into more later, but for now this is it. Have a great day and I'll be back!

SURPRISE! Or Not.......

So, I have been playing around over here cuz I'm tired of the limitations that confront me with my lack of WP.org knowledge and ability and am finding that I might just like it here for a change........or not. We shall see. Nothing is set in stone. I'm just gonna post here tonight and see how I feel about it :)

Having this time off from work, I have been able to get back in my kitchen with some time and energy and actually prepare meals, people! I love to cook, although I do admit to the act of doing it e.v.e.r.y. night for 40 years became a bit dreary and tiresome. The past year that I have been at W*M, working late hours, has left Chuck to fend for himself most nights so he is enjoying having real meals every night once again, as well. I've been sticking with old favorites, until last night whist chatting with my sweet Terri on line and she gave me the incentive to try a new dish. She was telling me about a new restaurant that we need to try when I go up to visit and that they make the best Carne Asada. Not knowing what that was, I looked it up, found this and made it for dinner tonight
It turned out delightfully delicious! The meat marinade was heavenly, key notes being the fresh lime and cilantro complete with the char broiled effect of my grill. Very Yummy and a keeper for sure!

It was a beautiful day here today, but I for sure felt in my 'mental element' as a Yankee Lost in the Ozarks! As I was flitting around town (well, hobbling, rather than flitting, as my hip is still bothering a bit. Whatever) thoroughly enjoying the 68 degree day I began to notice something. It wasn't sunny, but rather cloudy and very misty. Enjoyable temp, nonetheless! I was noticing, however, that I was pretty much the only person wearing shorts and a t-shirt. People had sweaters on. Some people were wearing jackets. WTF?!? I began to feel a bit out of place (which I am) and like people were 'looking' at me (which they were). LOL Kinda funny I think.

I was finally able to get my Leave of Absence packet from W*M late this afternoon, so tomorrow I will proceed to determine exactly which Doctor will take responsibility and sign it for me. Once that is turned in, my Short Term Disability should kick in and I'll be good until I see the surgeon on Oct 8th and start the process for the real thing. I am wondering if I should do this with the aid of an attorney, however. I suppose the Doctor can advise me on that from his experience. Any of you that have any insight, please feel free to share your comments.

I'm going to lunch with Victoria again tomorrow. We had such a good time last week and it was so good to be with someone that I have known for so long and so well. We caught up on kids, cats, dogs, mutual friends, old co-workers. It was all good and I truly enjoyed it. Last time we tried, I guess I just wasn't ready. It didn't feel right. Now it does.

I think that's it for tonight. I have some quilting to do before Chuck goes to bed and the sound of my sewing machine keeps him awake. Geez. For such a big house, there are no quiet corners! Mayhaps I could move my sewing room to the barn :) (or his bed......)
